This is for most of the Pituitary Rongeurs. First, start by making sure that the bottom and top jaws are aligned and the pins are tight. Second, with a fine grit piece of sandpaper place on the cutting edge of bottom jaw, slowly pull through until the cutting edge shows a small flat area about 1mm in length all around the whole cutting edge, repeat this step for the top jaw.
Now, you are ready to sharpen both the cutting edges by using our TC Burr (#BR270L), be sure to use at a very slow speed, (standard slow on a Dremel is not slow enough) you should use our Variable Power Supply (#TVSC3), to operate at 300 – 500 RPMs, this is about 1/3 the speed of the slow speed on an adjustable speed Dremel.
Starting with the bottom jaw, hold the burr at a 45 angel and slowly remove the material out toward the outside edge of the cup, be sure and not go too far, do not penetrate the outside edge, leave a very flat surface for the cutting surface, (cutting surfaces should never be “knife sharp”, for this edge will bend very easily and not cut). Now repeat this step for the top jaw.
For testing, it is not advisable to test on cardboard or any rubber products because the mechanical advantage is only a single action. Use a small piece of skin, like on a finger hang nail, to test only the tips, it should cut through this very nicely and capture this small sample.
